5 steps to Disable EDGE/3G data on iPhone

HOWTO | Friday February 29 2008 5:10 pm | Comments (33)

*Works on all iPhone firmwares up to 3.0 and most cellular carriers*
* Personally tested on my iPhone 2G/3G 3.1.2 on Rogers *

If you have an iPhone but didn’t get a data plan be in for a shock after you see your bill. When out of range of a Wi-Fi access point, the iPhone will automatically connect via EDGE/3G periodically incurring expensive charges. Usually 5 cents per kilobyte, 1MB is $50!

Here is how you disable it.

1. Launch Safari on your iPhone
2. Go to iphonenodata.com
3. Tap the “Disable EDGE/3G” button
4. Tap “Install”
5. Tap “Install Now” to confirm

That’s it!

Go to “Settings – General – Usage” to check if you’re using anymore data. The counter shouldn’t go up from on.  As you can see, my phone never ever used any data.

If you try to browse a web page, this is what you see.  Data is blocked

This has nothing to do with WIFI. it only touches the APN for edge/3G.

I don’t understand. A data plan is required on iPhone 3Gs anyway. What’s the benefit here? no way to NOT have a data plan placed on the account AFAIK. LMK please. Thanks

    Need your help – urgently!
Wanted to enable edge with your download – but because I am Mac user, I can’t open the download. Am I doing something wrong? I actually followed your steps, but didn’t come further than to tap the button. It downloaded something which I cannot open… Theres no ‘Install’ or anything like that! HELP?!!

    Thanks a lot

Does it means that v3.1.x is not supported? 🙁

As I understand the feature of the proposed profile is a not valid APN, username and password. So the carrier will refuse to establish GPRS/EDGE connection.
Yeah such a trick had worked some time ago. But lately I found that traffic’s counters are incrementing 🙁
Not sure what’s happend, the only reason I suppose is a firmware upgrade.

I would be greatly appreciate it if you could explain me what’s wrong 🙂

I have removed the iphonenodata profile but EDGE didn’t start to work… Tried to reinstall the profile and remove it but it didnt help. How to enable Edge againg.

Sadly this appears not to work on 3.1.3. I’ve got a 3G just upgraded it to 3.1.3. Did this and it was still pulling data from somewhere. Then I could just go on Safari and install the profile again – which means it just isn’t working. My prepaid balance is still disappearing. Am going to try something from Bossprefs because I’m O/S and can’t keep paying for a data plan.

    Hello admin,
Do you expect this to work with the new OS 4 or iphone 4? It’ll be great if it does. thanks

    Hi

This worked great on iPhone until I upgraded to iOS 4 yesterday. When I try goto the site now it comes with “Unknown error” after I click the link to disable?

    Thanks

Just sharing my 2cents, I’m from malaysia, using maxis as line carrier. After a week, trying various firmware from 3.0 to 3.1, yesterday i’m upgrade to 3.1.2 then jailbreak using spirit, add sbsetting through cydia, then I can control toggle button for “3G” or “E/Data”. Btw, need to press home and start button for 10secs for iPhone reboot, when apple logo show up in my screen, release both button and wait until my iPhone wake up. After that I try both connection, so the summary is if I want used internet/browse/remote = Make sure “ON” my “3G” and “E/Data” toggle button and if I don’t want to used it, I off both connection or “E/Data” only. Thats all.
